Does Bryan Johnson Cold Plunge?

By ProtocolPicksPublished

Bryan Johnson does not include cold plunging in his normal routine. This source-backed explainer separates Blueprint's current position, human research on cold-water immersion and body temperature, and the limits of an ear-thermometer reading. Important: Blueprint's temperature figures are self-reported. This article is informational, not medical advice, and does not recommend calorie restriction, cold exposure, or a target body temperature.

What the sources show

The short answer: no, not as a normal routine

Blueprint's March 2026 article says cold plunging is not part of Bryan Johnson's normal routine. It describes the evidence for cold plunging as a longevity therapy as early and inconclusive. That explains his current choice; it does not establish that cold-water immersion has no benefits for anyone.

The reported temperature figures are not a target

Blueprint reports that Johnson's temperature readings declined by roughly 4°F, with low morning readings, and attributes the change mainly to calorie restriction. The article does not provide an independently verified clinical record. The CDC defines a confirmed core temperature below 95°F as hypothermia, while research on peripheral thermometers cautions that an ear reading is not interchangeable with an exact core measurement. Do not treat 93–95°F as a goal or use this article for a medical decision.

Cold-water research does not yet answer the longevity question

A 2025 systematic review included 11 randomized studies and 3,177 participants. Inflammatory markers increased immediately and one hour after immersion; stress was lower at 12 hours but not at the other measured time points, and immediate immune effects were not significant. Sleep and quality-of-life signals came from narrative synthesis. The authors emphasized the small number of trials, limited samples, and lack of participant diversity, and the studies did not test whether cold plunging extends human lifespan.

Human calorie-restriction studies do not prove a longevity cause

The 2011 observational study linked from Johnson's November 2024 post compared 24 long-term calorie-restriction practitioners with two groups of 24 comparison participants and found a lower average 24-hour core temperature. In contrast, the two-year randomized CALERIE trial of 218 adults found that core-temperature change differed little between the calorie-restriction and usual-diet groups. Neither study measured human lifespan, verified Johnson's reported change, or proved that lowering body temperature extends life.

Cold-water immersion has immediate safety risks

The CDC warns that cold-water immersion can cause an involuntary gasp in the first minutes and can cool the body especially quickly. This page is an explanation of Johnson's published position, not a cold-plunge protocol. Anyone considering deliberate cold exposure should account for personal health risks and use qualified medical guidance rather than copying a public figure.

Where the Braun ThermoScan 7 listing fits

Bryan Johnson's April 2025 health-essentials video description links the Braun ThermoScan 7 product page. Blueprint's March 2026 cold-plunge article does not identify the thermometer model used for its reported readings. Braun describes this product as an ear thermometer that returns readings in seconds; it is not a continuous core-temperature monitor or a cold-plunge readiness system.
